Democracy Reform
It goes without saying there is an enormous gulf between the policies people want and what we actually get implemented. 75% of voters support a $20 Minimum Wage. 70% of Americans support Medicare for All and believe healthcare should be a human right. 75% say the wealthiest and large corporations should pay more in taxes. In spite of these numbers, nothing gets done. In fact, a Princeton University study found public opinion has near zero impact on U.S. law.
This is unacceptable.
Cory believes the Slave-State era Electoral System we still have today has failed to address the needs of working people. In Congress, he will support expanding the Supreme Court, instituting term limits, and Overturning Citizens United, a disastrous ruling which has allowed the rich to effectively buy elections. He will support automatic and same-day voter registration. In deep red or deep blue districts where Americans feel that their vote doesn’t count or have the same effect it would elsewhere, he will support nonpartisan redistricting commissions to draw congressional districts fairly so as to rein in gerrymandering.
Cory will support legislation like the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and attempt to foster conversations on Ranked-Choice Voting and other measures to make third-parties viable and allow for a more accurate representation of people than the two-party duopoly current does.
There's a lot more that could and should be done to modernize our electoral system, the Senate's apportionment and Senate Filibuster, as well as the Electoral College which allowed Donald Trump to be elected despite losing the popular vote of the majority of the people, could all use work. But these initiatives would be a start in moving us in the right direction.
